The failed April 26 army offensive cost the lives of 250 soldiers. The attack was to bring the army into position to take Elephant Pass back from the rebels. This would seal Jaffna Peninsula off from the rest of the island. The failure of the offensive has made peace talks more likely as there is now less support in the government for a military solution. This, as in the past, could change quickly.
