Special Operations Command is testing a new type of armor-piercing infra-red tracer for the 5.56mm rifles and carbines. This ammunition has a tracer that can only be seen through night vision goggles, making it harder for the enemy to use to locate US troops. The round is the standard steel-core type capable of penetrating 15mm of armor plate, a helmet, or a kevlar vest at 100 meters.--Stephen V Cole
